You Are On The Worst Electricity Rate In Texas! The Provider of Last Resort was never meant to be a long-term electricity plan. It was designed as a temporary safety net. If you are still on it, you are overpaying every single month.

HOW DID WE END UP HERE?

2002

Texas deregulates its electricity market. For the first time, residents can choose their own retail electricity provider. This was designed to create competition and lower prices for consumers.

2002 - PRESENT

Retail Electric Providers (REPs) compete aggressively for customers. Over 120 plans are now available in the Houston area alone. Prices, terms, and benefits vary dramatically between providers.

EVERY DAY IN TEXAS

Customers who move into a new home, apartment, or property without actively choosing a REP are automatically assigned to Reliant Energy as the Provider of Last Resort. This is not a competitive plan. It is an emergency backstop rate designed for temporary use.

A System That Was Never Designed For You

The Name Says It All

The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) designates one company in each service area as the Provider of LAST RESORT. The word 'last' is intentional. It is the option of absolute final necessity, not a plan anyone should stay on by choice.

You Were Never Asked

Most POLR customers did not choose Reliant Energy. They were assigned to it automatically when they moved in, when their previous REP went out of business, or when they simply never knew they had a choice. Texas has over 120 electricity plans available and you were put on none of them.

WINTER STORM URI CHANGED EVERYTHING

In February 2021, dozens of retail electricity providers across Texas failed, sending hundreds of thousands of customers to the POLR by default. Many of those customers never actively switched away. If you moved during or shortly after 2021 and have not reviewed your electricity plan since, there is a very strong chance you are still on the POLR or a variable rate holdover paying well above what you need to.

The Market Has Moved On

The lowest available electricity rate in the Houston area is currently around 6.8 cents per kWh. The average market rate is 15.05 cents per kWh. POLR customers pay above even that average. Every month you stay on the POLR is a month you are subsidizing everyone else's cheaper plan.
