Regulated Rate Option / Utility

2023 was a meaningful year for our team because we helped lots of families and businesses save money by leaving the RRO leading the way in the largest net reduction since 2012. This mass exodus from the utility is not over.

Retail Energy Provider

Thousands of Albertans switched from the utility to a competitive energy retailer because they have the ability to offer a variety of fixed and variable plans to fit a customers needs.

NEW Legislation

Press

Conference

Alberta's energy minister and premier have labelled the utility/RRO as VOLATILE asking every Albertan to leave and find a competitive retailer. 2023 was a meaningful year for our team because we helped lots of families and businesses save money by leaving the RRO leading the way in the largest net reduction since 2012. This mass exodus from the utility is not over. The Alberta government agrees that NO ONE should buy their energy from the Utility or Regulated Rate Option and to make that abundantly clear NEW legislation will be implemented on Jan 1, 2025.

Name

Change

First, there will be a change of name to drive the message home. The Utility companies Epcor, Enmax, Direct Energy Regulated Services, Atco Electric, Fortis and Lethbridge Power will no longer be called the Regulated Rate Option. Instead, their name will be the RATE OF LAST RESORT. This should be clear messaging that NO ONE in Alberta should be buying their energy from these companies.

Reduce

Volatility

Second, the legislation is not only focused on the title but also on how the rate is structured. This new rate will be set every 2 years for each Utility instead of every month. This way, utilities will be able to buy electricity from the wholesale electricity market for the Rate of Last Resort, which will extend the procurement period from three months to two years. The idea is to make the Utility more predictable for individuals that have to stay on it.

Your Last

Option

Within 90 days of providing services, ROLR will be required to call and confirm with their customers whether they’re choosing to sign a competitive rate contract or stay on the ROLR.

Providers will be required to share information with their customers on how to access a competitive retailer to find better rates.
